I make money for other people, but I can’t save for myself.
-Mars in the 2nd house
Mars in the second house is nothing if not a paradox, that too an unhappy one.
Here we see some paradox: They strive hard for money, play hard, push hard and win hard, enjoy hard, and usually lose hard. There are some exceptions, Mars in Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn, and surprisingly at times in Cancer, can help the native accumulate good amounts of money, but the rest of them, are usually at the cash burning end of the equation. Wherever Mars sits in the chart, the native has a habit of being aggressive in that part of life. While this works well with body and Mars 1st house can be very fit and be an athlete or at least a gym bro, Mars 2nd house is not a happy camper.
Understanding the Second House: 2nd house is the house of savings, mouth, food and natural house of Taurus which signifies luxury and comforts, the two things Mars is not at ease with. Bringing his fiery energy here, he is like a “fighter in a treasury,” not really equipped to handle this. While Shani does a bang-up job in the second house, often making the native rich, Mars is ill at ease and is going to make a mess of things for the native.
Let’s explore this in detail:
Money is a game: These guys consider money a game, they win they lose, they struggle, but they seek thrill and victory. As anyone with a strong Shani will tell you, money is where you need to play safe and cautious. Most people who play with money don’t keep it for very long. Mars brings his fiery energy to this house and converts money in a game. They don’t mind losing it but they continue to play.
Gamblers, traders, and speculators: Mars is the planet of courage, but I have seldom seen these guys rich. Money is used more as a scorecard than a sacred trust. With money one better play safe, the Shani way. Mars doesn’t believe in playing safe. I have seen these guys make money for others as they have the guts to be financial players. I have seen share traders, investment bankers, and speculators with this placement. Just like the soldier takes weapons of the king to fight his battle, risking his own life, these guys are the financial risk takers, betting big with other people’s money. Paradox here is that they often make money for other people, but for themselves, they over exert their risk taking and ultimately end up making losses.
Can make money can’t save money: Even if they get a good pay package, saving is not their strong suit. Their gains are always re-invested for another round of gamble. They burn their own money very easily, living it large, and spending recklessly. They easily loan money to friends and family, and at times to strangers, never bothering if they are going to get it back. Mars motto of “Dekh Jayega” doesn’t serve them well in the second house. They are driven to make money, but saving money is not a Mars trait at all. I often tell them to save money in the name of someone else, and have limited access to their personal money. Whatever amount they have direct access to, they are likely to spend it all.
Live life Soldier Size: “Live by chance, love by choice, kill by profession” is one of the mottos of soldiers. This is the way of Mars. They don’t want to wait for anything. They are not bean counters or accountants. Savings? What’s that? They would burn cash for a parlor trick, sheer fun of it. The legend of Pablo Escobar has it that he burned stacks of cash just to keep his children warm. He had Mars in 1st and Ketu in 2nd. You can see he did not bother much about savings. For him cash was to be enjoyed and used. A Shani in 1st or 2nd would have let his children freeze before he burned the first dollar.
Impulsive spending: Ketu or Mars in 2nd house would often spend on an impulse, it could be anything right from a gaming gear to a suit, if they fancy it, they would buy it if they are in the mood. It can be an absolute useless thing, but if they want it, the want it by all means and at any cost. Never mind the cost. They might regret it later (especially if they have a heavy Moon in the chart) but usually they would toss it somewhere, forget about it, and move on to their next fancy.
Fiery speech, blunt attitude: One thing I love about these people is that they can’t lie. They will tell you what they feel about something, all you need to do is ask. Mars 1st also has that attitude but Mars 2nd takes the cake when it comes to being blunt. Mars usually never talks, they cheer when happy, shout, growl, or threaten when angry. Nothing half-hearted about this planet. You want the truth, they would give you the truth, with all its crowns and claws.
Politically incorrect: These guys say what they mean, and mean what they say. You wanted to hear their opinion, now deal with it. They can’t lie to save their lives. They are the ones who talk back to the bosses, and other authority figures. They are often summoned by HR for hurt feelings and hurt egos. These verbal warriors don’t really care, they said what they said and might double down on it.
Prone to verbal conflicts: Thanks to their verbal aggression, they often invites debates and clashes. From classroom to boardroom, to WhatsApp groups, they would have their say and can be “In your face” with their opinion. Mars 2nd people are not the ones to stand down or backoff from a verbal dual. They can aggressively defend their position and won’t mind throwing in a cuss word or two to prove their points. Rahu and Mars in second are most likely to refer to your female relatives when they are angry. Unlike Mars 1st they may not take it easily to the blows and physical fight, but man they can make your ears bleed.
Family clashes and Civil Wars: Second house being the house of family, these guys have their fair share of civil wars. The family is often divided, as they won’t be politically correct about anything. They can and do make great friends with people they trust, but they usually don’t get along with the relatives, and can have shouting matches with them to the point of tearing the family apart.
Daddy Issues: One very typical aspect of this placement is that they don’t get along with the father most of the times. The 8th aspect of Mars is a dangerous one to have on the 9th house of father. Usually father lives away, passes away a little early in life, or if they live together there is not a happy chemistry between the father and the child. This can be understood by the fiery speech and reckless spending. Most Indian parents are happy to have a Shani child, Mars child makes most of them nervous. Then while Shani obeys, Mars rebels. These natives have the habit of answering back to authority figures, and they usually start with the father, something that the daddy ego can’t handle well. Unless the 9th house is very well dignified in the chart, they are at odds with the father.
Fiery eating habits: Mars is not the planet of moderation, and soldiers don’t like bland stuff. These guys can develop a taste for spicy foods, hot chillies being a favourite, they are also into “old time warrior” cuisine which would make a common person drink gallons of water after one bite. And yes they are fond of non-veg food. “Laal Maans” a red hot mutton preparation with a lot of chillies is one of the favoured recipes. They have a taste for all things strong and pungent. And they often top it up with alcohol.
Cheers to Life: Most countries have a quota of alcohol that is given to the armed forces. There is a reason behind that. The kind of life a soldier lives, they need something to calm them down. Mars in 2nd is likely to use that full quota and then some more. Unless the moon is damaged, they don’t make alcoholics, but most people with second house Mars, love their night cap. Rum is often the favourite, being a soldiers’ alcohol, but they can pretty much take anything and have fun.
Mouth and Throat Issues: Like Mars in 1st has an injury to the face or head, Mars in 2nd can have mouth ulcers, teeth injuries and throat issues. They can be addicted to chewing tobacco, further injuring their mouths, fiery food is almost always a favourite and can do further damage to throat and mouth. Irregular teeth can also be seen. They usually have to undergo a dental surgery at least once in their life. The Mars habit of branding his children with injury mark can lead to mouth or dental injuries.
Overall these guys are firmly in “What you see is what you get” Camp. Don’t expect diplomacy from them but they can be real authentic friends, if they called you a friend they would stand by you, through the thick and thin. They make one of those rare buddies that can lend you money whenever you need it, and never mention it again. A friend in need is a friend indeed. And don't mind the fiery speech, in fact it can come in handy, they would stand up to your enemies and have a shouting match on your behalf.
Be nice to them, invite them for a dinner, just ensure to have Rum and old world spicy cuisine. And you have a happy second house mars who might hug you after a few drinks, and tell you how much he loves you. And he would really mean it.
God Bless,
G. Vijay Kumar
